Oriental Christians in Europe

  • The Armenian Apostolic Church has been present since the 14th century in Western Europe. The oldest church is located in Vienna. Today, communities are located in every European country, especially in France, which after the genocide was a refuge for many Armenians in Europe. In Germany there is a seat in Cologne and several municipalities. The Armenian Catholic communities in Western Europe since the 18th century exist in Venice and Vienna. (see also Armenians in Europe)
  • Maronite and Greek Catholic Christians came from the 15th century most of theological training to Rome ( Vatican). Most Maronites and Greek Orthodox Christians in the Orient are francophone. For a long Lebanese come to France to study or continue their studies ( doctorate ). The civil war in Lebanon, many Lebanese Christians came to France. Today the Maronite Church in Paris, Marseille each communities. Since 2003, Vienna has a Maronite community, which are supervised by a pastor. In Vienna there is also a Greek Catholic community of Oriental Christians. In Germany there for a few years Maronite Church Communities in Münster, Hannover, Berlin and Frankfurt.
  • The Rum Orthodox Church has several communities in Germany and in France and in the UK. The Metropolitan for Europe resides in Paris.
  • The Coptic Church has several communities in Europe (Vienna, Paris) and two monasteries in Germany; the monastery Kröffelbach with a Theological Institute and the monastery Brenkhausen at ( Hoexter ) with the resident bishop Anba Damian ( General Bishop for Germany ) in Western Europe. In Germany there are about 10 churches in Italy since 1996, there are two Coptic dioceses: 1 Milan and surroundings; 2 Turin and Rome.
  • The Syrian Orthodox Church today has several dioceses in Europe: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. In Germany it is one of 51 communities with approximately 65,000 members, 12 parishes in the Netherlands, in Belgium, six, five in Switzerland, France and Austria, two. Monasteries exist in Hengelo (Netherlands), Monastery Mar Sarug in Warburg and one in Arth SZ on Lake Zug / Switzerland.
  • The Ethiopian Church has several communities in Western Europe. Many Ethiopian seminarians come for Theological Studies to Europe. The civil war, many Ethiopian and Eritrean Christians have come to Europe. Ethiopian churches there are in big cities (Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna, Cologne, Paris).
  • The Thomas Christians ( from India) in several major cities of Western Europe parishes ( Berlin, Vienna, Cologne). Many Indians came in the 1970s due to studies and work to Europe.
  • The Assyrian Church of the East has in Germany two communities in Wiesbaden and Mainz, including one of Altkalendarier with its own bishop: Mar Shalita Odisho Timothy ( b. 1936 ), and in Austria a mission in the Boltzmann in Vienna.
  • The Melkites, represented by the Greek Catholic Basilian women religious of the Holy Redeemer in St. Andrew ( Altenbeken ) monastery.
