Cornel Penu

Cornel Penu ( born June 16, 1946 in Galaţi ) is a former Romanian handball goalkeeper. In his playing days, he weighed 87 kg at 1.91 meters body length.

Cornel Penu was keeper of Dinamo Bucharest. His first major tournament with the Romanian national team was the World Cup in 1967, when the Romanian team previously finished third in the tournament after two world titles. Three years later at the 1970 World Cup in France, Romania won in the final against the GDR.

The Romanian world champion were also among the favorites for the Olympic debut of hall handball at denOlympischen Games in 1972 in Munich. After a 14:13 defeat against the Yugoslav team Romanians reached only the match for third place, in which they won with 19:16 against the GDR.
