Cornelius C. Schoonmaker

Cornelius Corneliusen Schoonmaker ( born June 1745 in Shawangunk (now Wallkill ), New York, † spring 1796 ) was an American politician. Between 1791 and 1793, he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Cornelius Corneliusen Schoonmaker grew up during the British colonial period and received a limited education. He was a land surveyor ( suveyor ) and worked in agriculture. During the Revolutionary War he was sitting in the Committee of Vigilance and Safety, and 1777-1790 in the New York State Assembly. During this time he ratified on January 8, 1788 the United States Constitution. Politically, he was an opponent of the then Federal Government under President George Washington ( Anti- Administration Group ). In the congressional elections of 1790 Schoomaker was selected in the fourth electoral district of New York at the time which meets even in Philadelphia U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of John Hathorn on March 4, 1791. He retired after March 3, 1793 from the Congress. Then he sat in the year 1795 in the New York State Assembly. He died in the spring of 1796 in Shawangunk, and was then buried in the Old Shawangunk Churchyard in Brunynswick. Congressman Marius Schoonmaker was his grandson.
