Cortés Department

Cortés is one of the 18 departments in Honduras in Central America.

The capital of the department and by far the largest city in Cortés is San Pedro Sula.

Cortés is located on the Atlantic coast in the Gulf of Honduras and the West has an external border with Guatemala. With a population of almost 1.4 million Cortés is the most populous department in Honduras.

The department was founded in 1893 by splitting off from the departments of Santa Bárbara and Yoro.
