Corythoichthys

Gelbgebänderte pipefish ( Corythoichthys haematopterus )

Corythoichthys is a genus of pipefish ( Syngnathidae ). The fish live in the coral reefs of the ground- oriented tropical Indo-Pacific. They are diurnal, live in pairs or in small groups and hold on especially on rocky ground in Riffnähe. At night, some species gather in large groups and search in the cavities of sponges protection.

Corythoichthys species are seven to twenty inches long. Your mouth tube is extremely thin and clearly deducted from the head. They feed on the smallest crustaceans, which they absorb from the soil.

Reproduction

The females lay, after a long courtship, several 100 to 1000 eggs. The eggs come out as a continuous band that unfolds, is pressed against the ventral side of the male, where it is surrounded by the brood pouch formed of two thin folds of skin. After a few weeks slip the small, transparent young fish that swim to the water surface, initially living pelagic and can spread so far.

Species

There are eleven scientifically described, and at least twelve undescribed species. Most are based on the types of snout length, and the head and distinguished body color. Many species can, however, difficult to distinguish. In addition, there are also color variations and local forms. Different types from geographically distant areas are likely to form closely related species complexes.
