Cosmopterix

Cosmopterix attenuatella

Cosmopterix is a species-rich genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The moths have a smooth scaly head. The sensors are 3/4 for 4/ 5 is so long as the forewings and often distally slightly serrated. The arrangement of white and dark sections in the apical part of the sensor is species specific. The labial palps are cylindrical and elongated. The last segment is usually strongly curved upward, often reaching beyond the head. The fore wings are narrow and lanceolate and have a long, narrow, protruding apex. The drawing consists of a yellow or orange tie, which is surrounded by nodular, shiny metallic pads or patches. The hind wings are nearly straight.

In the males, the Brachia are strongly asymmetric. The left brachium is very short, slightly sclerotized and often inconspicuous. The right brachium is long, strongly sclerotized and for the species identification of meaning. The Tegumen is short and has the front edge of a sclerotized ridge. The Valven are rounded. They have a fairly narrow proximal portion and a distal portion dilated and densely hairy. The Valvellae are usually symmetrical. They are long, curved ventrally and sometimes have a dorsal bulge. The aedeagus is short, often bulbous and tapers to. There is a flange-shaped sclerotization at the base. The eighth segment has two oval Pleurallappen that obscure the basic Valve.

In females, the Apophyses are posterior half as long as the anterior Apophyses twice. The sterigma is strongly sclerotized, tubular and often stands out. At the far end is an ostium. The shape of the sterigma for species identification is important. The ductus bursae is long and narrow and sometimes sclerotized before flowing into the corpus bursae. The corpus bursae is provided with two triangular and oval, sometimes very small signals. The rear edge of the 7th sternite is made in the median plane as a bulge on, this is usually surrounded on the sides of special black scales.

Dissemination

The representatives of the genus are distributed with the exception of the polar regions of the world. To date, more than 230 species have been described, most are native to tropical regions.

Biology

The caterpillars nate in the leaves of various grasses, herbaceous plants or shrubs. The food plants belong to different families such as the hemp family ( Cannabaceae ), grasses ( Poaceae ), Leguminosae ( Fabaceae ), nettle family ( Urticaceae ) and others. Most species live Cosmopterix oligophagous or even monophagous, so that the knowledge of the food plant and the shape of the mine for species identification are important. The caterpillars ready to often silky hiding, in which they retire, if they do not eat. The caterpillars overwinter in a cocoon that is made inside or outside the mine.
