Costanzo Varolio

Constanzo Varolio ( Latinized Constantius Varolius; * 1543 in Bologna, † 1575 in Rome ) was an Italian physician.

Varolio studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Bologna where the anatomist Vesalius and pupil Giulio Cesare Aranzi was his teacher. 1567 he was in medical doctorate (MD) and in 1569 he received the newly created Chair of Surgery in Bologna, but also taught anatomy. 1572 he went to Rome, where he may also taught at the University La Sapienza, but there not listed in the faculty was. According to some sources he was the personal physician of Pope Gregory XIII. , Who also came from Bologna. He had to have been a good reputation as a physician and surgeon and is very adept at removing bladder stones in Rome.

He is best known through the book De Nervis Opticis about the anatomy of the brain. He directed the anatomical section of the brain using new methods and went instead from above from below before. He also discovered new parts of the brain, such as the Pons Varolii (but already knew Vesalius ). He also dealt with the anatomy of erection.
