Costești

Costeşti is a city in the county of Arges (Romania).

Location

Costeşti located on the northern edge of the Wallachian Plain, on the transition to the foothills of the Southern Carpathians. The district capital Piteşti is situated about 20 km north.

History

Costeşti was first mentioned in 1452 and in 1968 declared a town.

A tragic event took place in the town on Good Friday of the year 1930, as in the former wooden church burned 130 people, most of them children.

Agriculture and food processing are the main industries of the city. There are also some smaller industrial companies.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 10,868 residents were registered in Costeşti, including 10,760 Romanians and 102 Roma. 8,440 lived in the city proper, the others in the six local villages.

Traffic

The Costeşti Station, on including high-speed trains, is an important railway junction in the south of Romania; here branches off from the route Pitesti Rosiorii de Veda the train to Piatra Olt from. Also of importance of the bus ( regular service to Pitesti ). Through the city along the national road 65A runs from Piteşti to Turnu Măgurele.
