Cottens

Cottens (? Freiburg Patois Kotin / i ) is a municipality in the District de la Sarine ( German: Sarine district) of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. The former German place name Cottingen is no longer used today.

Geography

Cottens is on 713 m above sea level. M., 11 km southwest of the capital of the canton of Fribourg (air line). The village stretches a scenic location on the northern side of the valley of the Ruisseau de Cottens, in Molassehügelland of Fribourg Mittelland.

The area of ​​5.0 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the gently undulating Molasseplateaus between the Broyeebene the north and the Glânetal in the south. The area is crossed from west to east from the valley of the Ruisseau de Cottens. To the west of the commune spell reaches into the formerly marshy valley with the ponds of Lentigny. To the north of the valley of the communal land extends to the high surface with the Grand Bois ( above 751 m. M. the highest point of Cottens ) and up to the edge of the forest of Les Boennes. South of the Ruisseau de Cottens is the plateau of Rimbochat and Pertet (up to 745 m above sea level. M. ). From the municipality surface 1997 10 % came from settlements, 17 % of forest and shrubs, 72 % to agriculture and about 1% was unproductive land.

To Cottens include the living quarters on the Bimont, the hamlet of Les Rialets (707 m above sea level. M. ) on the western flank of the Glane as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of La Cottens are Brillaz, Neyruz, Hauterive, Farvagny and Autigny.

Population

With 1385 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Cottens belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Fribourg. Of the 93.0 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.4 % and 0.7 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Cottens amounted in 1850 to 268 residents in 1900 to 403 inhabitants. After peaking in 1940 with 552 inhabitants, the population increased to 1970 from 465 people. Since then, a significant population growth was again associated with a doubling of the population recorded in 30 years.

Economy

Cottens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by agriculture village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing, dairy farming and livestock have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. Since 1991 Cottens is the site of a nursing home. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the region of Freiburg.

Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the main road from Freiburg to Romont. The nearest links to the motorway A12 ( Bern -Vevey ) is located about 5 km from the center. On September 4, 1862, the railway line from Freiburg to Lausanne was taken with a station in Cottens in operation. History

The territory of Cottens was settled very early, which could be demonstrated by the discovery of traces of the Mesolithic. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1142 under the name Cotens. Later, the names Cottens ( 1173 ), cotains ( 1223 ), Cotteins ( 1252), Cottin ( 1445 ) and Coctens, Chotens and Chottens published. The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Cotto and means with the suffix -ene as much as the people of Cotto.

In the Middle Ages Cottens was under the rule temporarily Arconciel. Since the 12th century, a noble family of Cottens is mentioned. The estate belonged to the 13th century the Counts of Neuchatel. The Abbey Hauterive had rich land in the municipality. No later than 1442 Cottens came under the rule of Freiburg and the Old Landscape ( Neustadtpanner ) has been assigned. After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) belonged to the village during the Helvetic Republic and the subsequent time to the district of Freiburg, before it was incorporated in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution in the Sarine district.

Attractions

Since 1423 Cottens possessed the chapel of Saint- Martin, which was in 1956 replaced by a modern church. By 1930, the village belonged to the parish Autigny, since it forms a separate parish.
