Cottonwood is a city in the southwest of the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located in Lyon County located and has about 1100 inhabitants.
Geography
The small town of Cottonwood is located at the Cottonwood Lake north-east of Lyon County. The 131 -acre and a maximum of 2.1 meters deep lake stretches to the west of the city, but not officially part of the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 2.2 square miles with no water surfaces.
About the Minnesota State Route 23, the place is connected to the road network of Minnesota. Also is a railway line of the BNSF Railway through the city.
History
The area around the present town was first settled in 1871. Cottonwood was formed in July 1888 as Section 9 in Lucas Township. The city got its name from the adjacent lake, on whose shores poplars (engl cottonwood ). On January 12, 1892 Cottonwood was a Village.
