Count Palatine Joseph Charles of Sulzbach

Joseph Karl Emanuel August von Pfalz- Sulzbach ( born November 2, 1694 Sulzbach, † July 18, 1729 in Oggersheim ) was Count Palatine and Prince of Pfalz- Sulzbach from the House of Wittelsbach.

Family

Joseph Karl was the eldest son of Duke Theodor von Pfalz -Sulzbach Eustace (1659-1732) and his wife Eleonore Maria Amalia of Hesse- Rhine rock ( 1675-1720 ). His siblings were Johann Christian Joseph and the Abbess Franziska Christine von Pfalz- Sulzbach

The line of the Dukes of Sulzbach was a side branch of the House of Pfalz- Neuburg, who provided the Electors of the Palatinate, and their designated heirs in case of extinction of Neuburg line.

Life

After the accession of the Elector Palatine Karl Philipp of that Neuburger line to the end of this branch of the family became apparent gradually. Neither Charles nor Philip one of his many brothers had produced a legitimate male heir who would have the electoral heritage can compete. This was already clear to 1716, that the Duke of Sulzbach would inherit the Palatine Electorate. In 1717, Karl Philipp married his only surviving daughter Elisabeth Auguste Sofie of the Palatinate ( 1693-1728 ) with the Sulzbacher Hereditary Prince Karl Joseph. Thus he had the Neuburg and Sulzbach lines merged and a son of this marriage would be even Elector Palatine become.

However, Karl Philip did not go to plan. Although the couple had several children, but all died in infancy. Alive only remained three daughters. Elizabeth died in 1728 at another birth and Joseph Karl died in Oggersheim only a year later. His heirship first went over to his brother Johann Christian (1700-1733) and then to his son Karl Theodor, who then on December 31, 1742 after the death of Charles Philip, Elector Palatine was. Karl Theodor, incidentally, was married to the eldest daughter of Joseph Charles Auguste Elisabeth since 1742. Another daughter, Maria Franziska Dorothea was married to Friedrich Michael von Pfalz- Birkenfeld. Joseph Charles embarked on a military career and was built in 1721 imperial general field sergeant.

He was buried is located in the St. Michael's Church in Munich.

Founder of Oggersheimer Loreto pilgrimage

Joseph Karl von Pfalz- Sulzbach had built with park from 1720 in Oggersheim in Mannheim ( no longer available) pleasure palace. In this park, he left in 1729 to build a Baroque Loreto Chapel, which he ordered a copy of the local Mercy image of a Black Madonna in the Italian Loreto. The widowed Pfalzgraf, however, died soon after, and the palace complex orphaned.

Elector Karl III. Philip handed the Oggersheimer Loreto chapel on March 1, 1733 the Mannheim Jesuits to care. In order to electoral transferred to Annunciation 1733 (25 March ), founded by the Count Palatine Joseph Karl miraculous image in the chapel and declared the Madonna of Oggersheim patron of the Electoral Palatinate. Due to the princely patronage and many answered prayers, the pilgrimage site quickly developed into a regional center of pilgrimage. The Loreto chapel was built over in 1775 with the magnificent pilgrimage Church of the Assumption and integrated into this; the Sanctuary exists to the present day.
