County Monaghan

Monaghan ( Monaghan Irish ) is a county ( county ) in the Republic of Ireland.

Geography

In the north part of the Slieve Beagh is ( highest elevation 373 meters) in the area of the county, a plateau of limestone; in the middle of a valley extends to the south by hills ( drumlin region ) is limited. Here, there are many lakes and swamps.

History

In ancient times, the area belonged to the kingdom of Ulster and came 332 to the newly formed Kingdom of Oriel. Between the 14th century and in 1589 it was owned by the Irish dynasty MacMahon. In the 17th century the area came under British rule.
