County Westmeath
Westmeath (Irish At Iarmhí ) is a county ( county ) in the Republic of Ireland.
Geography
The county is located in the Central Irish level and is bounded to the west by the River Shannon and Lough Ree.
History
In the Middle Ages the area was part of the Kingdom of Meath ( Cro Inis ). In 1173, the area was conquered by the Anglo-Normans and later first awarded under the name domination Lochsewdy to the De Lacy, at the Verdun as a fief. 1316 the area was reunited with the rest of Meath and only separated in 1543 as an independent county.
Economy
In agriculture, dairy farming predominates; only in the county administrative headquarters Mullingar and Athlone, there are textile industry and distilleries.
Policy
Westmeath send three deputies in the Irish Parliament ( Dáil Éireann ).
