Courthézon

Courthézon is a commune with 5418 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Location

Courthézon is located nine kilometers south-east of Orange, east of the Rhone. In the immediate vicinity there are the communities Bédarrides, Châteauneuf -du -Pape and Jonquières.

History

The building was created by the Romans fort was built to protect from Orange. The rock layers were used for the ramparts of the old castle.

The municipal area was a quarry, which was used for the construction of the theater of Orange.

During the Wars of the Catholic city was attacked several times by the Huguenots.

Courthézon belonged until its annexation by Louis XIV in 1673 with the Principality of Orange. From 1703 to 1731 the city was under rule of the Conti family and was then, sealed by a contract between the Prince of Conti and Louis XV. , Finally to the royal domain.
