Crăciunelu de Jos

Craciunelu de Jos ( German Christian village or Kratschendorf, Hungarian Alsókarácsonfalva ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

Craciunelu de Jos, also known as the Hungarian names Oláhkarácsonfalva or Karácsonfalva, located in the southwest of the Transylvanian Basin, the river Târnava ( Kokel ) on the National Road ( Drumul National) DN 14B and the railway line Teiuş - Braşov. The city Blaj located 7 kilometers east and the county capital Alba Iulia away 33 kilometers south-west.

History

According to reports from G. Téglás and Kurt Horedt findings were discovered from the bronze, the Hallstatt and La Tène period on the territory of the municipality. Craciunelu de Jos was first mentioned in 1324 under the name domus Karachyni, 1332 under Villa Karachyni. It was in the Middle Ages inhabited by impaired Hungarians and Romanians village, which belonged to the Hungarian noble family Bánffy. In 1733 it was mentioned as So - Kracsunfalva and wine-growing. By the end of 2005, the present church Bucerdea Grânoasă was under the administration of Craciunelu de Jos.

The highest population of Hungary ( 213) in 1910, the Germans ( 15) in 1920 and 1966 and the Roma (231 ) 1992 found. In the 1992 census, the last time two German were registered.
