Craig S. Harris

Craig S. Harris ( born September 10, 1953 in Hempstead, New York) is an American jazz trombonist.

Harris worked from 1976 to 1978 with Sun Ra and then with Abdullah Ibrahim, with whom he undertook a world tour in 1981. After his return, he was a member of David Murray Octet and Big Band and has performed with Henry Threadgill, Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, Olu Dara, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra.

In addition, he has led several groups of their own, including Tailgater 's Tales and Cold Sweat. In 1988 he founded the Nation of Imagination, Inc., an organization dedicated to the realization of multimedia projects dedicated to. In collaboration with the poet Sekou Sundiata The Circle Unbroken Is a Hard Bop (1992 ) which was awarded in 1993 with the Bessie Award was created. In 1994, Lost in Translation, a fusion of music, dance and poetry, in collaboration with David White and Joseph Mellilo, the founders of The Next Wave Festival of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the choreographer Marlies Yearby and guitarist Vernon Reid.

In the same year he and Sundiata began work on Return of Elijah, a piece that deals with the history of the slave trade (premiered 1996). 1997 Remembering We Selves was listed when he played alongside Amiri Baraka as artistic director, composer and performer. In 1998 he was involved as a composer and bandleader in Tongues of Fire Choir, an evening of music and spoken text with Nona Hendryx, Ntozake Shange, Jessica Hagedorn, Regina Carter, Quincy Troupe, Amiri Baraka and Sekou Sundiata. With Ray Anderson, Gary Valente and George Lewis, he plays the trombone quartet Slide Ride.
