Cranves-Sales

Cranves-Sales is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Cranves-Sales is located at 531 m above sea level. M., about 11 km east of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on a hill between the plateau of Annemasse and the little valley of the Nussance, at the western foot of the mountain range of Les Voirons, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​13.61 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the lower Arvetals and the adjacent heights. The southern boundary of the municipality runs along the Menoge, a right tributary of the Arve, the barely touched valley is incised about 50 m into the surrounding plateau. From this river, the municipality's area extends northward to the plateau of Annemasse up in the forest area Bois des Rosses and on the hill of Cranves-Sales, a lateral moraine of the glacial Rhone Glacier. This Moränenhöhe is bounded on the east by the little valley of the Nussance, which runs parallel to the slope foot of the mountain range of Les Voirons. Beyond the valley extends the communal land on the open slope down to the densely wooded ridge of the massif of Les Voirons, the northern border is formed by the erosion of the stream channel Chandouze. On the Pointe de Brantaz is 1440 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Cranves -sales.

The municipality consists of the villages and Cranves Sales and different hamlet settlements, including:

  • Rosses (526 m above sea level. M. ) at the edge of the plateau of Annemasse
  • Montagny (500 m above sea level. M. ) on a promontory between the valleys of Nussance and Menoge
  • La Bergue (509 m above sea level. M. ) on the plateau at the foot of the slope of Les Voirons
  • Lossy (590 m above sea level. M. ) on a terrace on the western slopes of Les Voirons
  • Martigny ( 712 m above sea level. M. ) on the western slopes of Les Voirons
  • Chez le Noble ( 770 m above sea level. M. ) on the western slopes of Les Voirons
  • Armiaz ( 927 m above sea level. M. ) on a terrace on the western slopes of Les Voirons

Neighboring communities of Cranves -sales are Saint- Cergues in the north, Boëge, Saint -André -de- Boëge and Lucinges in the east, Bonne and Arthaz -Pont -Notre -Dame in the south and Vétraz -Monthoux, Annemasse Ville- la-Grand and juvigny in the West.

History

The territory of Cranves-Sales was inhabited in prehistoric times. A native of this time Dolmen was however destroyed in 1863. The Romans settled in the area, which could be demonstrated by finds of foundations of a Roman villa and an aqueduct.

The place name Cranves probably goes back to the Celtic word cranava, which consists of the components caran (oak) and ava (water) composed.

Cranves was first mentioned in writing in the year 1000, when the Bishop of Grenoble ceded lands to the Counts of Geneva. Sales will appear in 1317 for the first time in the documents. The two municipalities were merged in 1801. Another area of ​​change was 1868, when the hamlet Rosses, who had formerly belonged to Vétraz -Monthoux, also joined Cranves -sales.

Attractions

The Church of Cranves originates from the 13th century. From this time the bell tower is still preserved; the other parts are the result of major transformations in the 16th century and 1890.

Population

With 5660 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cranves-Sales is one of the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1960s, a continuous increase in population was recorded thanks to the attractive residential area. Outside the old village center caused to the promising slopes of Les Voirons numerous single and multi- family dwelling districts.

Economy and infrastructure
