Crawling (human)

The Bug's Life is the movement of the child on hands and knees or lower legs, the child lifts the body off the ground. It is the next level of locomotion after creep and begins about the tenth month of life. Crawling muscles and coordination ability of the child to be trained. With the onset of crawling and increased mobility a child begins increasingly to explore its environment.

Most children learn to crawl in the second half of the first year of life, but crawling is not an absolute prerequisite for the learning of the free walking. Some children replace crawling through forms of Robben or by pushing forward of the body in a sitting position ( " Porutscher "). Even after learning to walk many children crawl for some time.

Importance of crawling

Developmental psychologists repeatedly emphasize the importance of crawling for the training of the child's basic motor skills. The children automate when crawling cross motions by moving opposite body parts of the left and right side of the body at the same time. Thus, the cooperation of right and left hemisphere of the brain is trained. This interaction is important for many areas of development, such as in the learning of reading and writing.

From Zurich long-term trials in which approximately 700 children shows that about 13 % of children choose other modes of travel (seals, rollers, Porutschen etc.). The studies show that this has no effect on the subsequent development or academic performance of children.

When crawling the locomotion of many animals will also be referred to, particularly the insects, arachnids and crustaceans.
