The sparse language certificates are out of the onomastic material obtained only in records of the Flemish diplomat Ogier Ghislain de Busbecq, who had come during his time as ambassador in Constantinople Opel from 1554 with a spokesman for the Krimgotischen in contact, in his report on the embassy whose appearance and manners described and some krimgotische words and phrases with their makeshift Latin translation chronicled, for example:

  • Broe " panis ( bread = ) "
  • Plut " sanguis ( = blood) "
  • Hoef " caput ( head = [→ main ] ) "
  • Schieten " mittere sagittam ( = shoot ) "
  • Knauen tag " bonus this ( = good day ) "

These testimonies show some Gothic, on the other hand also more West Germanic features. Therefore, the classification is not entirely uncontroversial; some researchers expect a West Germanic ( Low German and Dutch ) language.

Over the centuries, numerous loanwords found entrance into Krimgotische, especially from the Greek, Iranian and Slavic languages . Thus, the Crimean Goths for the number word hundred took over the Iranian sade (but see gothic dog ).
