Crippleware

As a cripple goods or crippleware ( engl. = cripple cripple ) refers to a product which is markedly limited by lack of functions and their restrictions are lifted only 'if they purchase. The user should be granted, for example, insight into the software, but at the same time be motivated by the strong limit the functionality to acquire the full-scale product.

Examples of restrictions on Crippleware are:

  • Lack of features for storage or conversion to other file formats
  • Missing print functions
  • Limitations - for example, when encoding a restriction to five minutes, the length
  • Forced insertion of the manufacturer or brand name (branding ), eg in converted movies
