Following the recognition of the Croatian Football Federation ( HNS) by UEFA in June 1993, Croatia took part in a qualifying first time in 1994 for a U-21 tournament. The team finished in 4th place in a group with Ukraine, Italy, Estonia, Slovenia and Lithuania and qualified therefore not for the European Championship 1996. Too, for the European Championship 1998, she failed to qualify though, however, the team succeeded two years later, the qualification for the European Championship 2000. In a group with the Netherlands, Spain and the Czech Republic Croatia landed on a disappointing fourth place. 2004 the team achieved the hitherto final qualifying for the European Championship.
