Croatian presidential election, 2005

In the 2005 President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic election, the incumbent was re-elected head of state.

Election process

On 2 January 2005, the first round took place in Croatia for the presidential election. It lacked Mesic only one percentage point for the required for an election victory half of the votes. Jadranka Kosor reached 20 percent of the vote in second place.

On 16 January 2005, the Croats voted in the runoff between the incumbent Stjepan Mesic and his rival, the Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.

In the presidential election of Stjepan Mesic incumbent has clearly won the election. On the basis of exit polls reported state television, Mesic got 70.75 percent and Kosor therefore 29,25 percent of the votes.

Mesic plans

Mesic said after his re-election, it was the goal of his tenure to make Croatia a member of the European Union. Is a prerequisite for accession negotiations, that the indicted by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague is Croatian General Ante Gotovina was arrested and extradited.
