The splendor Autumn crocus (Crocus speciosus ) is a species of the genus Crocus (Crocus ).

Features

The splendor Autumn crocus is a perennial tuber Geophyt, achieved the stature heights 7-15 cm. The Knoll shell is paper- like and has distinct rings on the ground.

The 3 or 4 leaves are green, ciliate scattered and 4-5 (rarely to 8 ) mm wide. The Perigonzipfel measure 25-60 × 8-22 mm. They are blue and purple have on the outside is usually darker spots, dark main nerves as well as fine transverse nerves. At the bottom they are white to pale yellow. The pens have numerous branches and overtop the stamens far. The stamens have yellow anthers ( Crocus pulchellus with difference ).

The flowering time is in October, rarely begins in September and lasts until November.

Occurrence

The splendor Autumn crocus is in the northern and central Turkey ( with the exception of the West), in the northern and western Iran, in the Crimea, in the Eastern Caucasus and Transcaucasia before. The species grows in deciduous and coniferous forests and pasture grass at altitudes vo 800-2850 meters.

System

The splendor Autumn crocus is closely related to Crocus pulchellus and hybridized with this. The subspecies Crocus speciosus subsp. xantholaimos B.Mathew has a yellow throat.

Use

The splendor Autumn crocus is scattered used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens, borders, groups of trees and grass. The species is in cultivation since about 1835. There are some varieties (selection):

  • ' Aitchisonii ': The variety is great and late flowering.
  • ' Albus': The flowers are white, the throat is pale yellow.
