Cross-resistance

Under cross-resistance is defined as the insensitivity of a bacterial species with respect to two or more antibiotics, which are usually built very similar or have similar mechanisms of action. In penicillins and cephalosporins, for example, shows such a cross-resistance. Both have a similar chemical structure and disrupt the cell wall biosynthesis of bacteria by inhibiting enzymes that are responsible for cross-linking of peptidoglycans.

Cross-resistance also at antifungals ( drugs used to treat fungal infections) observed, eg itraconazole and fluconazole.

Under a parallel resistance is defined as the insensitivity to unrelated drugs due to different resistance mechanisms.
