CrossOver (software)

CrossOver is a commercial wine version of the company CodeWeavers. There are versions for Linux and Mac OS X. CrossOver was designed at the beginning specifically to support Microsoft Office, but in the meantime a number of other Windows software is supported.

Development

CrossOver is developed by CodeWeavers. This reflected in the improvements that are made to the under LGPL Wine source code, in the free project back. CodeWeavers also employs some of the Wine developers. The configuration software that allows convenient installation of the programs, however, is under a proprietary license.

CrossOver Server was a client -server system solution, which made the need for complicated, multiple installation of CrossOver and thus to install Windows software, such as in business. This one was supported by some compiled for management programs. The clients were in contrast to the servers run not only on Linux but also on Solaris. CrossOver Server was discontinued in 2007 and incorporated in CrossOver Linux Professional.

Up to and including CrossOver 10.3.0 distinction was made between CrossOver and CrossOver Games, which were each optimized for the operation of office software and games, and could also be purchased in a package with extended support period. With CrossOver 11 this separation was abandoned. Buyers can now choose between three different support levels and basically have access to both versions (Linux and Mac OS X).
