Cuban Trogon

Kubatrogon ( Priotelus temnurus )

The Kubatrogon or Tocororo ( Priotelus temnurus ) is the national bird of Cuba. Its plumage in shades of red, blue and white corresponds to the colors of the Cuban national flag. It is endemic to the islands of the Greater Antilles Cuba and the Isla de la Juventud.

Features

Kubatrogone reach 25 to 28 cm in length. Males and females are similarly colored. The head is in contrast to similar Rosentrogon ( Priotelus roseigaster ) blue purple with white throat. The short and wide beak is colored darkly above and reddish hand. The chest is dull gray, the abdomen red. The back is green, the wings have conspicuous white stripes and spots. The tail is long, jagged ends and is on the bottom mostly white.

The song consists of a usually repeated several times " toc- coro " or " toc co - loro ".

Way of life

The species colonized dry and moist, prefers shady forests all altitudes. It breeds in tree holes. The clutch consists of 3-4 white eggs.

System

There are described two subspecies:

  • Priotelus temnurus temnurus ( Temminck, 1825)
  • Priotelus temnurus vescus Bangs & Zappey, 1905

Inventory and risk

Information on the size of the world stock does not exist, but the species is relatively common and the stock is considered stable. It will therefore total classified by the IUCN as uncritical ( " least concern ").
