Culpepper Island

Culpepper Iceland is a tiny island, which is located immediately off the east coast of Barbados. The name of the isle goes back to one of about 1650 to about 1830 residents in this area Family. Politically it belongs to the district of Saint Philip.

The island is an approximately 40 by 50 meters large rock, which rises about ten feet from the water. This is just north of the Cape Ragged Point, one of the four lighthouses of Barbados, the East Point Lighthouse, bears and just before the spots Bayfield. From the main island, it is only separated by a 30 meter wide channel. This could be true at low tide by wading, because of the unpredictable currents is expressed but dangerous, so urgently needs to be discouraged. The east coast is characterized by a steady rough Atlantic swell. This suggests to the rugged coast, including those on Culpepper Iceland.

Culpepper Iceland is sparsely covered and uninhabited. Tales of the bayan, the inhabitants of Barbados, after which the peasants had worn earlier sheep grazing on the island are not really believable as the island appears attractive neither of their small size here, yet because of their extremely sparse vegetation for this use.

On 12 March 2006, the small island just acquired a small entry in the history book of Barbados. A group of descendants of the pre-European inhabitants of Barbados, the Arawak and Carib Indians had occupied the island symbolically and claimed it for himself. The originating from Guyana Indians of Lokono - Arawak and Carib - Karifuna declared that they were descendants of the tribe of Princess Marian. She was the daughter of the last chieftain of Lokono - Arawak, Amorotahe Haubariria (English Flying Harpy Eagle). This chief of the Eagle clan of Arawkas is buried at the Westbury Cemetery in Bridgetown. Consequently, they claimed Culpepper Iceland as their tribal and territory.

Once in the 1950s, the formerly located in front of Bridgetown Pelican Iceland in the wake of the expansion of deep-sea port was a part of the mainland of Barbados, Culpepper Iceland is now the only side island of Barbados. At the Pelican Iceland today remembers The Pelican Village with the " Pelican Crafts Centre ", an attractive shopping and office area, right on the harbor in the district of St. Michael, Barbados.
