Cumdach

A Cumdach is a rectangular container for the storage of precious books, which was used in the Middle Ages in Ireland.

Cumdachs were made of bronze, brass or wood and were covered with gold and silver ornaments. Overall, only ten Cumdachs are known, the oldest three of which have not survived. The known Cumdachs are:

  • Cumdach the Book of Durrow, 877-914
  • Cumdach the Book of Armagh, 938
  • Cumdach the Book of Kells, 1007
  • Cumdach of Molaise 's Gospels, 1001-1025
  • Cumdach the Stowe Missal, 1023
  • Cumdach of Cathach of St. Columba, 1084
  • Cumdach the Book of Dimma, 1150
  • Cumdach of Domnach Airgid,
  • Cumdach of Cairnech 's Calendar 1534
