Kashmir Cypress (Cupressus cashmeriana )

The Kashmir Cypress (Cupressus cashmeriana ) is a plant from the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native to Bhutan. The existence of deposits in North-East India is controversial.

Description

The Kashmir cypress grows as a small evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 18 meters in exceptional cases. It forms a conical to nearly pyramidal crown. This consists of the ascending branches and drooping branches. The older, reddish - brown branches often wear three or four years, no leaves.

The scale-like leaves are usually colored blue-green. However, these colors may be mixed with other colors. The protruding blade tips are blunt.

The cones are spherical shaped with a diameter of about 12 millimeters. At first they are pale green and have a bluish tires. When ripe they turn out dark brown. They consist of ten Zapfenschuppen each carrying ten winged seeds.

Dissemination

The natural range of the Kashmir cypress includes Bhutan. Whether in the neighboring Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim also resources exist, is controversial. Furthermore, the species was introduced into Tibet.

The first description was in 1867 as Cupressus cashmeriana by John Forbes Royle and Élie -Abel Carrière in Traité général des conifères, 161 It was once considered a juvenile form of the Himalayan cypress ( Cupressus torulosa ) or as a variety of Tears cypress ( Cupressus funebris ) viewed. A synonym for More Cupressus cashmeriana Royle ex Carrière is Juniperus tortulosa Griffith.

The species is divided into two subspecies:

  • Cupressus cashmeriana subsp. cashmeriana
  • Cupressus cashmeriana subsp. himalaica ( Silba ) Silba. A synonym is Cupressus himalaica Silba.

Threats and conservation

The Kashmir cypress is in the IUCN Red List as "vulnerable" out. It is noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary.
