Curley Russell

Dillon " Curly" (also called " Curley " ) Russell ( born March 19, 1920 in New York City, New York, † July 3, 1986 ) was an American jazz bassist of bebop.

In memory of the bassist Curly Russell for his involvement with the early Savoy Sessions by Charlie Parker (1945 /47) and the Prestige sessions will remain of Thelonious Monk.

Curly Russell first played trombone and bass, but soon focused on the bass alone. He was charged with 18 years of professional musicians and had engagements with Don Redman in 1941 and Benny Carter in California in 1943. Russell came in 1944 to New York City and soon became one of the most sought after bass players in the bebop scene. He played until the mid- 1950s with all the prominent musicians of the bop, like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Serge Chaloff, Tadd Dameron, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Milt Jackson, Bud Powell, Zoot Sims, Sonny Stitt, Fats Navarro, JJ Johnson and Art Blakey. With Parker, he took 1945 " Koko " at its session in part; with Thelonious Monk, he recorded his recordings for Prestige Records (1952 /54). The mid to late 1950s, Russell did not as noticeable; he played at this time mainly in rhythm and blues bands.
