Curtis Doebbler

Curtis FJ Doebbler (* 1961 in Buffalo ) is an American lawyer and legal scholar. Main field of activity is Doebblers international humanitarian law.

Life

Doebbler who is both American as a Dutch citizen, studied English literature and journalism from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He completed his studies there in 1984 with the degrees of Bachelor or a bachelor of fine arts from. He then studied at New York Law School, from which he graduated in 1988. Since then, he is quite an attorney in the field of international human rights act. Admitted he is in Washington DC. Continue in 1994 He received the degree of Master of Laws at the Radboud University Nijmegen and received his doctorate in 1998 at the London School of Economics and Political Science on international law.

Doebbler was 1989-1991 Honorary Advisor of the Dutch Council for Refugees. 1992 to 1997 he was a consultant in humanitarian projects in the area of former Yugoslavia. He taught from 1995 to 1997 at the London School of Economics and in 1997 also at the University of London as a guest lecturer. In 1996 he was a visiting professor at the University of Tuzla. August 1997 he was a professor at the University of Khartoum and from 1997 to 1999 consultants in advisory committee for human rights of the Sudanese Ministry of Justice by the end of 1998. He also advised UNICEF 1997 law in Sudan. 2000 to 2002 he taught in the political science faculty of the American University of Cairo, and in 2002 was Visiting Professor at the University of Pristina. January to June 2003 he was again a guest professor in Pristina and January to June 2004 Visiting Professor in Tashkent. 2005 Doebbler was appointed to the An-Najah National University in Nablus professor of jurisprudence. It represents the beginning of 2007, the NGO Nord Sud XXI at the United Nations in Geneva and New York. Since October 2007 he has also been a visiting professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations and the Geneva branch of Webster University.

Legal work

As a lawyer he represented, among others, Saddam Hussein before the Special Tribunal in Iraq. He explained that he likes to represent unpopular clients because their rights are abused most likely and such cases are most likely touchstones of due process are. He believes that in principle, any violation of human rights must be atoned court, but also every defendant in such processes a fair trial and defense deserve. He also advised the Taliban in Afghanistan and represented inmates of the prison camp at Guantanamo before the Supreme Court of the United States.
