Cutlass

As a Cutlass or Cutlass is usually referred to a long knife with broad blade of the Navy.

Cutlasses were known since the 16th century as the preferred melee weapon at sea. The Cutlass was probably first developed by the British Royal Navy, which was looking for a weapon that could be used both in melee and in the defense of Enter attacks. In addition to the boarding ax, the Cutlass began by quickly. It was used by many nations as a standard armament of the sailors.

Cutlass was available in different versions: Slightly curved or straight, with all round hand protection or without. Allen was common that cutlass were very reasonably priced as a rule, as cheaper steel was used for their production.

Use

The cutlass was the universal weapon in close combat at sea, as it was in the confined space of the ship with its short and sturdy blade in close melee advantage.

From the cutlass as a tool later was probably the machete, a thick, very top-heavy knife, which is perfectly suited to cut sugar cane or to clear dense vegetation.
