Cutthroat eel

Dysomma anguillare

The family of eels ( Synaphobranchidae ) consists of almost 40 species. They have a stout body with shed and large jaws with small teeth. The skin is covered with stunted shed. But here is the genus Haptenchelys an exception: they are scaleless. Characteristic of the eels are the outer gill openings, which lie in a slot-shaped hole on the ventral side between the breast fins. The larvae have telescopic eyes.

Dissemination

They occur in the Atlantic and Pacific ocean and live in the deep sea between 400 and 2000 m at water temperatures average around 5 ° C.

Nutrition

The diet consists of crustaceans and fish. In the stomach of Synaphobranchus Kaupi caught at a depth of 1000 m, octopus eggs were found.
