Cy Young Award

The Cy Young Award is awarded annually to the best pitcher for the Major Leagues ceremony. It was introduced in 1956 to honor the recently deceased in Hall -of- Fame pitcher Cy Young. First, the award was only given to the best pitcher of the entire Major Leagues since 1967, the best in the National League and the American League to be honored separately.

The award comes after a vote in the Baseball Writers Association of America, in which for each club, two journalists are entitled to vote ( in the American League with 14 clubs therefore 28 votes cast, in the National League with 16 teams according to 32). On the ballots first, second and third places are to be noted; for initial placement, five points are awarded for second place and three points for third mentions a point. If several players have the same highest score, the prize is shared.
