Cyrille Delannoit

Cyrille Delannoit ( born March 13, 1926 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, † 11 February 1998) was a Belgian boxer. He was European champion in the professional boxers in the middleweight division.

Career

Cyrille Delannoit, one of three boxing brothers, was after a short time amateur in 1945, a professional boxer. His first fight, he played on 10 February 1945 in Brussels and won against his compatriot de Wilde by disqualification in the second round. Until 26 March 1946, he played in Belgian rings a total of 27 fights almost exclusively against Belgian boxer, of which he won 21 fights. On the above date, he fought in Antwerp against those covered by the best French middleweight Learning Kid Marcel and defeated this on points. His next opponent was on April 11, 1946 in Antwerp, a Frenchman. Robertsville Main, who was one of the finest in Europe already in the middleweight division, proved to be too strong an opponent for Cyrille Delannoit that after ten laps lost that fight on points.

Cyrille Delannoit denied his next fights a weight class lower, at welterweight. He qualified this by winning about Jan Nicolaas, Gaspard Deridder and Nol small for a fight to the Belgian welterweight championship against Willy Wimms. This battle took place on August 4, 1946 held in Ghent and Wimms won him by knockout in the 11th round.

From this defeat Cyrille Delannoit left, who was a technically gifted and faster boxer, not stop it. Due to his courageous battle, he soon received the nickname " Tarzan". He won the next 12 matches in a row and posted on 15 March 1947 in Brussels against the Dutch champions Luc van Dam a remarkable draw. With victories over the French lace boxer Laurent Dauthuille on January 24, 1948 in Antwerp and Antoine Toniolo on March 20, 1948 in Kortrijk, to Cyrille Delannoit the challenge right acquired in the European middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan. On May 23, 1948, he then managed before 35,000 spectators in Brussels Heysel Stadium, the sensation and beat Cerdan on points. He was so new European champion at middleweight.

In the rematch on July 10, 1948 at the Palais des Sports in Brussels Cerdan, however, brought by a points victory after 15 the title already back to lay him shortly afterwards, because he went to the United States in order for the world championship against Jake LaMotta to box. Cyrille Delannoit was thus already on 6 November 1948 in Brussels, the opportunity for the European middleweight boxing for the second time. He took advantage of this opportunity and defeated Luc van Dam after 15 rounds by points.

After a points victory over the strong French Mickey Laurant in the February 27, 1949 in Liege Cyrille Delannoit defended his European title on 7 May 1949 in Brussels against the emerging young Italians Tiberio Mitri. Mitri dominated this fight clearly and beat Delannoit four times to the ground. After 15 laps he therefore received the deserved points victory. On June 20, 1949 Cyrille Delannoit fought in Birmingham against Randy Turpin and lost by technical knockout in the 8th round. Turpin was at this time still at the beginning of his great career that culminated with winning the world title at middleweight.

After some notable victories of Cyrille Delannoit in the years 1949 and 1950, he defeated among others the Frenchman Gilbert floor and again Mickey Laurant and a draw against the British Middleweight champion Albert Finch, he fought on 1 July 1951 at the Turin Palazzo dello Sport against the world champion at middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson. It was in this fight, not for the world championship, but he still was highly significant for the career of Cyrille Delannoit. Sugar Ray Robinson but proved to be too good, he sent Delannoit within the first three rounds three times on the boards, which led to the abandonment of Delannoit.

After another defeat on 10 October 1951 in Brussels against Frenchman Marcel Kid Cyrille Delannoit occurred only 25 years old, back. On 22 December 1955 he tried in Antwerp against his compatriot Harry Mino a comeback. When he but after ten rounds also lost this fight on points, he never again entered a ring.
