Cyrus West Field

Cyrus West Field ( born November 30, 1819 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, † 11-12 July 1892. ) Was an American businessman.

Cyrus W. Field was a merchant in New York and arrived in a short time to great prosperity. In 1853 he turned his attention to transoceanic telegraphy (see submarine cables ) and acquired by the Government of Newfoundland the exclusive right to a cable from the U.S. there and then to put on to Europe. From that time on he devoted himself to the cause of his life and the first -won successes in this field we owe largely to him. Together with his brother and four other business partners they ventured limited to their own funds to this company. Cyrus W. Field accompanied the expeditions of 1857 and 1858 and also took large part in the expeditions of 1865 and 1866 and contributed very significantly to the ultimate success of the company. Also in the following years devoted his interest to the Field underwater telegraph and 1871 he was one of the main sponsors of the line through the Pacific Ocean Hawaii to China and Japan.
