Dabbahu Volcano

BWf1

The Dabbahu (also Boina, Boyna or Moina ) is a stratovolcano in the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia, 311 km west of the port city of Djibouti. It has a height of about 1442 m and is one of the most active volcanoes in the country.

General Information

The Dabbahu lies on the rift zone of the East African grave breach, a continental seam that runs through East Africa with a length of 6000 km to Mozambique. The volcano rises above the bottom of a dried-up sea, which had emerged as the Danakil block was lifted by plate tectonics and in the Afar triangle isolated from the Red Sea.

Eruptions

The first known eruption took place in September 2005. A column on the northeast flank let out ashes. 6000 people from neighboring villages were evacuated. Further eruptions took place in August 2006 and from August 21, 2007 instead ..
