Dafydd ap Gwilym

Dafydd ap Gwilym (* 1320 in Ceredigion ( Cardiganshire ), † 1350 ) is regarded as the greatest Welsh poet.

Biography

Dafydd ap Gwilym is from a noble family, was not professionality bard, but masterful in the use of Welsh verse forms. He is due to the popularization of Cywydd metric.

From his works, a large-scale European influence can be seen, for example, from wandering minstrels and troubadours French, suggesting a variety of traveling, even to the Continent, suggesting. In his works he uses the contemporary colloquial language of educated stands, avoids archaic expressions, and thus is considered the founder of recent Welsh poetry.
