Dámaso Alonso

Damaso Alonso ( born October 22, 1898 in Madrid, † January 25, 1990 in Madrid) was a Spanish poet, linguist and Hispanist.

Life and work

The scientist

Damaso Alonso y Fernández de las Redondas was at the Complutense University of Madrid Ramón Menéndez Pidal of students. After two years at Oxford University, he was appointed in 1933 to the Chair of Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Valencia, from there in 1941 at the University of Madrid ( until 1968 ). There Fernando Lázaro Carreter was one of his students. 1948 Alonso was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy and in 1950 was added to the public; after the death of Ramón Menéndez Pidal, he took over its management. He gave the Revista Española de Filología out.
