Damn Small Linux

Damn Small Linux [ [ [: Template: International Phonetic Alphabet ]]] ( DSL [ [ [: Template: International Phonetic Alphabet ]]], dt damn small linux) is an English-language Linux distribution that is different from a business card CD (50 MB) can start. The Damn Small Linux project has been launched by John Andrews and Robert Shingledecker and was originally based on Knoppix. Today, Damn Small Linux is based on Debian GNU / Linux. Currently, the distribution is not actively developed because the inventor could not agree with the main developers.

Properties

Damn Small Linux is designed, even on old computers with outdated hardware (for example, with 486 architecture, 16 MB RAM and small hard drives under 54.0 MB) to run. The distribution can be installed using both as live CD and on the hard disk. It can even be started in a MS- Windows window ( dsl - embedded), as it is possible, for example, even at TopologiLinux, Puppy Linux, and CoLinux WinLinux. Because of their low memory requirements, this distribution offers the possibility to completely out of RAM ( 128 MB ) or a USB stick to work.

Since version 4.0 of the Linux kernel 2.4.31 is used. Since version 3.0, the file system is UnionFS DSL used in which it is possible in live mode to change local files and thus, for example, retrospectively install programs.

Included applications

Despite its small size, this distribution offers a complete desktop.

  • Fluxbox ( window manager )
  • JWM ( Window Manager)
  • Mozilla Firefox (browser)
  • Dillo ( simple browser )

As of version 0.7, Damn Small Linux is using the myDSL extensions extensible, GZip - compressed binary archives with the file extension. dsl. The principle of Damn Small Linux is comparable to that of Vector Linux or that of the already mentioned above with the Knoppix.

Damn Small Linux Not ( DSL -N)

In 2006 there were with DSL -N ( Damn Small Linux Not) the attempt to develop a DSL oriented Linux distribution, which, however, was not bound to the 50 - MB limit of DSL. Thus, the use of the Linux kernel 2.6 and GTK2 was possible. For DSL -N so many programs are not available as for DSL ( unlike DSL can not embed the Debian package sources). The last version of DSL -N 0.1RC4 (24 August 2006) has a size of 95 MB.
