Daniel Ryan (figure skater)

Daniel Ryan ( * 1930, † February 15, 1961 in Mountain Kampenhout, Belgium). Was an American figure skater, who started ice dancing

Ryan was raised by his grandmother Caroline Naylor in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was national champion in artistic roller skating and tried in ice dancing for the first time at the Catholic University in Washington DC, he attended. During his Eistanzkarriere he was trained by Lewis Elkin and Walter " Red" Bainbridge.

His Eistanzpartnerin was Carol Peters. Together with her, he won in 1952 and 1953, with the first two World Cups, in which ice dancing was in the program, the bronze medal behind the two British Eistanzpaaren Jean Westwood / Lawrence Demmy and Joan Dewhirst / John Slater.

Ryan ended his competitive career in 1953 and became a coach in the Minto Skating Club in Ottawa. He married the skating coach Rose Anne Paquette, and they moved to Indianapolis in 1955 to become a coach at the local figure skating club. In this role, he coached the U.S. Eistanzmeister of 1961, Diane Sherbloom and Larry Pierce. As their coach, he went on board the Sabena flight 548, which was to bring the national team of the United States to the World Championships in Prague. The plane crashed in the Belgian mountain Kampenhout. There were no survivors. Daniel Ryan, 31 years old, left his wife and five children, the youngest of whom was two weeks old and the oldest of five years.
