Danielle de St. Jorre

Danielle Marie -Madeleine de St. Jorre d' Offay (* September 30, 1941 (according to other sources: 1943) in Mahe Island, Seychelles, † February 25, 1997 in Paris) was a politician from the Seychelles, which was not only Secretary of State, but, in particular, began as a national language of the Seychelles for the introduction of Creole.

Biography

Danielle de St. Jorre completed post-school studies at the University of York, the University of London and the University of Edinburgh and was then first teacher. Later, she was Director of the Teacher Training College before it was State Secretary in the Ministry of Education.

In this role, she advocated, the English language in school to the creoles to expand at least. Together with the Kreolistin Annegret Bollée she published a translation of the Gospel according to Mark ( 1974) in Creole and 1978 orthography for Creole language under the title Apprenons la nouvelle orthographe. It, thus, an important foundation for the next step in the Seychelles Language: 1981 approved a Congress of the Unity Party of Seychelles People's Progressive Front ( SPPF ), to raise the Creole to the first national language, with English as the second and the French as a third language, and the introduce Creole from 1982 in the schools. In 1983, the Association of Community kreolischsprachischen was founded ( Zil spell Creole ) under her presidency.

Then she was between 1987 and 1989 Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Planning.

In 1989 she was appointed by President France- Albert René Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Economic Planning. In a cabinet reshuffle in 1992, she was also Minister of the Environment. These offices she held until her death in 1997.

The International Ocean Institute awards in her honor since 2000, " Danielle de St. Jorre scholarship " to women from small island states, which deal with marine research.
