Danilo Dolci
Danilo Dolci ( born June 28, 1924 in Sežana, today Slovenia, † 30 December 1997 Trappeto, Sicily ) was an Italian architect, sociologist, social reformer and pacifist. He was known for his anti-Mafia in Sicily initiatives and building a non-violent social movement. They called him the " Gandhi of Sicily ".
Life
In 1952 he gave up his architecture studies and began to organize in the Sicilian fishing village Trappeto together with the inhabitants of the construction of an adult school, a kindergarten, a hospital, an orphanage, and an irrigation system. He became known through many imaginative non-violent actions, such as the "reverse strike of Partinico " in which he arbitrarily a country road repaired together with 200 unemployed, which evaluated the authorities as an illegal action and pursued. In 1958 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize and founded the prize money, a research institute in Partinico, Centro studi e iniziative per la piena occupazione ( study center and initiative for full employment ).
