Danthonia

Three tooth ( Danthonia decumbens )

The grapes oats ( Danthonia ) are a genus of grasses of the family Gramineae ( Poaceae ). The genus is named after the French botanist Etienne Danthoine who explored the grasses of Provence in the 19th century.

Features

The grapes are oats Perennial plants with sometimes long rhizomes. They are race - or Horst -forming. The renewal shoots grow up inside or outside of the lowest leaf sheaths. The culms are erect, rarely decumbent or geniculate - ascending. You have three to six nodes that are serrated and bare. The leaf sheaths are open to the bottom, grooved and glabrous to hairy. The ligule is a lash. The leaf blade is flat to rolled, narrow, mostly strongly serrated. In the vernation the leaves are rolled.

The inflorescence is a panicle, but can be reduced to a bunch of grapes (such as for Danthonia alpina). She stands upright, pulled together to spread. The spikelets consist of 2-12 flowers, the uppermost floret is usually reduced. The spikelets of up to 25 mm long, is compressed on the sides. The florets fall when ripe from individually, the stop glumes. The glumes are similar, 3 - to 7- annoying, the same length as the spikelet, membranous and pointed. The lemmas usually 9 nerves, hairy, derbhäutig and wear at the top of two long teeth. In between sets at a gekniete awn. The palea are two annoying, shorter than the lemmas and have distinct, ciliated keels. There are three stamens. The ovaries are ovoid, bald and wearing two short terminal stylus with feathery scars.

The caryopsis is bare and firmly enclosed by the glumes. The embryo is elongated. The umbilicus is narrow - elliptical or line-shaped and takes a quarter to four-fifths of the length of a fruit.

Save the vegetative organs as reserve carbohydrates, fructans.

Dissemination

The genus is Holarctic spread. Their representatives grow in open spots: grasslands and open forests, often in hilly areas.

System

The genus Danthonia is placed in the subfamily Danthonioideae and whose only Tribus Danthonieae within the family. The genus comprises about 100 species.
