Darabani

Darabani is a town in the district of Botosani in Romania.

Location

Darabani lies in the Moldavian Plain ( Câmpia Moldovei ), on a plateau south of the river Prut. The county town of Botosani is located about 50 km south. Darabani is the northernmost city in Romania and is adjacent to the tri-border region with Ukraine and Moldova.

Name

The term Darabani is of Hungarian origin and is derived from " soldier ". In Romania, the name Darabani is often used, which corresponds to the " Wallachian " understanding the Romanian language. The city's official name however is the " Moldovan " form Darabani.

History

The region of present-day town has been inhabited since around 3000-4000 BC. Darabani was first mentioned in 1546 under the name Căbiceni. The name Darabani occupied since 1725. 1841 was created in the first place village school in the former Principality of Moldavia. In particular, in the 19th century Darabani was characterized by a strong Jewish population. In the years 1877 and 1878 there were between Jews and Romanians isolated cases of physical altercations, as well as court cases, in which it was ging.1968 to land ownership issues explained Darabani to the city. This is, however, continues to be characterized predominantly rural; the soils are very fertile and Darabani to promote agriculture and livestock.

Population

1930 lived in the town of 10,748 people, of which 1,917 as Jews, who called almost all others as Romanians. As of the 2002 census, 11,820 residents were registered in the city, including 11,812 Romanians; 2011 were registered 9,893 inhabitants, including 9,433 Romanians.

Traffic

Darabani has no rail connection. Several times a day there are buses to Botosani. Through the city runs the European Route 58
