Darcy Ribeiro was one of the most important thinkers of Latin America in the 20th century. As a novelist, he has used the creative power of literature to fictionalize his insights into the complex problems of Brazilian society. As an anthropologist he went through his theoretical work on the Brazilian indigenous people and his theory of the long-term historical development of a name.

Until the military coup of 1964, he was for many years in politics and administration in Brazil operates, among others, from 1962 to 1963 as Minister of Education; then he went into exile. The early eighties, he was able to return to Brazil, where he was also Minister of Culture in the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

The condition of the Latin American societies he took over Octavio Paz ironically: "We are the ones who are no longer what they were, but not become those who we might be or wanted. Since we do not know who we were when we were innocent in them [ the Indians ], we know nothing about ourselves knowing even less who we will be. " ( Darcy Ribeiro, Wilde's Utopia. Yearning for lost innocence (Frankfurt am Main 1986) 32)

Positive he put it: " In truth, we are the new Rome. A later and tropical Rome. Brazil is already the largest neolateinische nation, if only because of its population, and it is also going to be this thanks to its creativity in artistic and cultural point of view. It is necessary just yet, this will be in the field of technology of a coming civilization to become an economic power by itself verantwortetem progress. We are in the fight to see to it that a new culture flourish, mestizo and tropical, proud of himself. Heiterer because more suffered. Better, because this culture has several humanities. Generous because open to coexistence with all races and all cultures and because it is located in the most beautiful and most luminous province on earth. "
