Dârjiu

Dârjiu ( German R or Därsch, Hungarian Székelyderzs or Derzs ) is a municipality in Harghita county in Transylvania, Romania. To her also heard the village Mujna.

Population

In 1992 the town had 847 inhabitants in the narrower sense (mainly Hungary / Székely ), some of which belong partly to the Catholic, the Unitarian faith.

Attractions

The town is the site of a fortified church, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1999. The fortified church is one of the Székely Church castles and was constructed around the 13th or 14th century. In the 15th century fortified church was enlarged in the late Gothic style and so received the preserved to this day form.

The building is part of the Unitarian Church of Transylvania. The Unitarianism in Transylvania was recognized since the Diet of Medgyes / Medias 1583. The first bishop was Franz Davidis, a Transylvanian Saxon.

The Gothic frescoes date from the Catholic period of the area and were discovered in the 19th century. The theme of the frescoes is the Ladislaus legend ( kumanischer incidence in Hungary). Duke Ladislaus I ( cousin of King Solomon ) fought together with King Solomon ( 1063-1074 ) against the invading Cumans.

Other important Gothic frescoes in Transylvania are in Ghelinta (Hungarian Gelence ) and Mălâncrav ( German Malmkrog ).
