Darley Arabian

Darley Arabian is one of the three founding stallions of the Thoroughbred. According to a 2001 study published in Animal Genetics walk alone on this stallion 95 % of all English Thoroughbreds back.

Darley Arabian was probably born about 1700 in Syria and sent to 1704 by Thomas Darley, to which it owes its name to England. In his accompanying letter extant Thomas Darley shares his brother John with: " ... of the most esteemed race among the Arabs, Both by sire and dam, and the name is called Mannicka " ("... of the most valued breed among the Arabs, both father and mother side, and the name is Mannicka "). Muniquis (or Mannicka, as Thomas Darley writes ) are not classical or thoroughbred Arab, but come from Turkmenenpferden ( Akhal -Teke ), which have been bred pure in Syria and Iraq for racing, such as Carl Raswan in his standard work drinkers fan writes.

According to General Stud Book, he was employed 1706-1719 in Yorkshire for breeding. He did not have very many, but so much more successful offspring. In particular, the matings with the mare Betty Leeds were very successful and in turn good sire.

One of his direct descendants is Eclipse.
