Darling Downs hopping mouse

The Darling Downs Hüpfmaus ( Notomys mordax ) is an extinct rodent from the genus of Australian Hüpfmäuse ( Notomys ). The Aborigines called payi. It is only known from a single skull, which was found some time before 1846 in the Darling Downs in south-east Queensland. The skull suggests that it was either the Mitchells Hüpfmaus ( Notomys mitchellii ) are closely related or possibly identical with it. The molars, however, were longer, the incisors were wider and in contrast to most other species of mice, an additional Vormahlzahn was present. Recently, a number of subfossil skull Notomys instances in Coonabarabran has been found in northeastern New South Wales. They had smaller teeth than N. mitchellii from Victoria and South Australia. However, it is up to now unclear which type they belong to. The extinction of Darling Downs Hüpfmaus was possibly a consequence of the introduction of cattle herds that have changed their habitat greatly.
