Darlinghurst, New South Wales
Darlinghurst is a suburb of Sydney, with around 10,000 inhabitants in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is 1 kilometer east of the town center and the area of Hyde Park within the administrative area ( LGA) City of Sydney. Darlinghurst is colloquially known as Darlo.
Darlinghurst is a densely populated, its inhabitants live mostly in apartments or townhouses. Formerly a slum and red light district, it has undergone in the 1980s, an urban renewal and there was such a cosmopolitan, sophisticated and colorful residential area. Lively cultural life takes place mainly in Victoria Street, on the border of Kings Cross. History
Darlinghurst was formerly known as Eastern Hill and later Henrietta Town, was after the wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the second first name Henrietta. At the beginning of the 19th century, the district got its present name, in honor of Elizabeth Darling, the popular wife of Governor Ralph Darling. Hurst is in the Old English term for a wooded area.
Attractions
In Darlinghurst are two of Sydney's museums: the Australian Museum, a natural history museum and the Sydney Jewish Museum. In the period 1836 to 1840 also the Darlinghurst Gaol was built, a large prison of sandstone in the heart of Darlinghurst. Among other things, the Australian poet Henry Lawson was incarcerated during his wild years. Since 1921, used as a technical colleague, it was established in 1995 as the new home of the National Art School.
The Darlinghurst Fire Station, completed in 1912 and the Darlinghurst Courthouse built in 1844, are other well-known buildings.
